Thailand: Successfully separated conjoined twins heart
Doctors at Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok (Thailand) on April 5 said they had successfully performed the surgery to separate a conjoined twins of the heart and liver.
Panward and Pantawan Thiyenjai were born on June 17, 2006, conjoined from the chest to the abdomen, sharing the heart and liver - this is a rare conjoined twins in the world (1 / 50,000 scale).
Pediatrician Mongkol Laohapensaeng said the 12-hour surgery was carried out at Siriraj Hospital on February 20 with the participation of 61 Thai doctors and nurses. More than 50 days after surgery, their health is quite stable. The hospital postponed the announcement of the operation until the doctors were certain of their chances of survival.
This is the first time in the world that doctors have successfully separated twins attached to the heart and both are still alive after surgery.
