Thailand's capital Bangkok will be engulfed by the sea
Le Monde newspaper recently published 'Bangkok is sinking into the sea', which warns that by 2030, part of the Thai capital will be flooded.
Climate change, rising sea levels, coastal erosion, weak clay . many factors combined to threaten Bangkok. In addition, the city's population is growing, with more than 10 million people adding to the rise of tall buildings that also contribute to 'submerging' the city. Currently, a large part of Thailand's capital is lower than sea level. Each year the subsidence is about 1.5 to 5.3 cm.
Climate change, high sea level rise, coastal erosion, weak clay . threaten Bangkok.
It is forecasted that in the future, 90% of houses in Bangkok will be threatened by sea water, the ground floor of buildings may be flooded about 10 cm for a time of the year. Although the prospect is increasingly gloomy, the Thai government has not had any formal plans. According to a Thai disaster prevention official, if the government does not act early, Bangkok will be engulfed by 2030.
In terms of solutions, experts seem inconsistent. Some people believe that it is recommended to build dams along the coast, some people call for strengthening the management of construction land in the city, some people respect the solution to build houses like before.
Le Monde said, in the past, there were many canals, gardens and rice fields in this area, so a large amount of flood water was released. Over time, with the speed of urbanization, people have built many buildings on these plots, so there is no escape from flood waters. In this context, Le Monde urged experts to quickly find a common voice to prepare Bangkok's " rescue ".
