Archaeologists from the Cultural and Archaeological Agency of the state of Chhattisgarh, India, discovered the city dating back about 2,500 years in Tarighat, Durg district, Chhattisgarh state. It is located on an area of about 2 hectares on the banks of a river, The Times of India reported.
"We found pieces of pottery, coins, seals and terracotta statues in the four mounds. Each mound has a height of about 4.5 meters. The excavation process of the entire city can last from 5 to 10 years, " said JR Bhagat, deputy director of Chhattisgarh State Cultural and Archaeological Agency.
Analysts say this is the most important archaeological discovery in India for at least half a century.
The two Kushan and Satavahana dynasties once ruled the area where the ancient city was located from the 3rd century to the 5th century BC. Although scientists have found many evidence of urban development in India after the first century BC, finding a whole city is an extremely rare event.
