According to an infectious disease specialist, the best way to protect yourself from the flu is to get vaccinated and it is never too late to get a flu shot.

University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (USA) points out a number of other ways to reduce the risk of getting the flu.

Make sure you cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.

Hand hygiene: Make sure you wash your hands often and properly. If soap and water are not available, hand sanitizers can be used. It is important to be aware of what you touch, including surfaces and common items such as phones, door handles and keyboards, which can be a source of infection.

Cover your cough: Make sure you cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. It is best to use a tissue, if not available, you can use your sleeve to cover it.

Rest: If you, your children or family members have the flu, take a break at home to keep from spreading the disease to others. It is important for people who are ill to get rest to recover completely.

People with the flu should see a doctor, some medicines can help reduce symptoms if starting treatment early. Also, if you have chest pain or trouble breathing, see your doctor right away, as it may be a warning sign of pneumonia.
