The coffins hang mysteriously in Sichuan

In the rocky mountains of Gongxian, Sichuan, China has a graveyard formed on vertical cliffs, where wooden coffins are hung in the air with 2-3 wooden bars.

These tombs are thought to have been created by the Bo, a tribe that disappeared about 400 years ago. Each coffin is made from an empty tree trunk.

According to Chinese researchers, the oldest of these tombs has been identified from 3000 years ago and the nearest 400 years ago.

Nobody really knows why the Bo buried the deceased in this way. But researchers believe it may be the way people live to let their deceased relatives be closest to the gods.

"It is believed that coffins are hung on cliffs to prevent dead bodies from being attacked by animals and at the same time blessing eternal souls , " the Daily Mail quoted a local researcher as saying.

In the past 2 months, ancient coffins have been recreated with the purpose of preserving them.

However, during the process of cultivating 40 coffins, Chinese researchers discovered 16 new ones dating back to 3000 years.

The hanging coffin is a popular form of burial in the southwest of ancient China. However, this custom has gone along with the mysterious disappearance of the Bo people.
