The largest graveyard in the world from Google Earth

Located in Tucson, Arizona with an area of ​​more than 10.5 km ² , equivalent to 1,430 football fields, Boneyard gathered more than 4,200 aircraft that no longer operated by the US Army from World War II.

According to Popular Mechanics, the vast strip of Davis Air Base - Monathan is called Boneyard. Because the US military has too many expired aircraft that cannot be fully stocked, they decided to park the plane between the dry Arizona hot desert to avoid rust and corrosion. About 1,000 aircraft lined up in 10, ² km area.

Boneyard was born after World War II, when tens of thousands of redundant aircraft needed parking space while waiting for arrangements. Today, the facility is under the management of the 309 Air Force Maintenance and Reconstruction Team (AMARG) of the US Air Force. Although it was located in the air base, it received aircraft of the Marines and the US Navy.

The aircraft were taken to Boneyard for many reasons. Some aircraft were shut down early and kept for use when needed. For example, in 2006, three US Marines CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters returned to operation after 11 years of being stationary in Boneyard.

Many aircraft have been dismantled with useful parts for assembly of operating aircraft, a process that is becoming more and more popular as the US military fleet becomes old. Other aircraft such as F-16 Fighting Falcon are converted into unmanned aircraft to train aiming to hit air targets. The rest is waiting to be transferred or shipped abroad to be broken down and sold to scrap dealers.
