'Stucco drawings have provided an unprecedented view of how the Mayans perceive paradise, the sun and the sun itself have been combined to identify with kings and dynasties. ' , according to AFP, expert Stephen Houston.

Atop the structure is a temple covered by a series of masks depicting different stages of the sun.

Set on a high mountain slope overlooking the panoramic city of El Zotz, the pyramid has survived impressive throughout 1,600 years.

Drawn in red, the temple represents the power of the reigning dynasty and is most brightly lit at sunrise and sunset, enough to see about 25km away.

The sun is a key element of ancient Maya power, a symbol of royal lineage and authority, according to Houston expert.
