The most powerful electric ferry in the world

In Norway there are 2 villages Lavik and Oppedal separated by a narrow bay that is difficult to build bridges, so people have to use ferries as a means of connection.

But, the type of ferry in use is rated 'too dirty' because it burns 1 million liters of diesel each year, discharging 570 tons of carbon dioxide and 15 tons of nitrogen dioxide. This needs to change, and it is expected that the ferry will use electric motors (developed by Siemens and Fjellstrand Shipyard), each time it takes 10 minutes to charge electricity.

The electric ferry is 80m long, equipped with 2 electric motors. Each engine weighs 10 tons, to turn a propeller to help the ferry to carry 120 cars and 360 passengers each time. One of the reasons for a strong, energy-saving electric ferry is in the reasonable design of the two hulls. The total weight of electric ferries is less than half that of conventional ferries of similar size. The trick is to use aluminum alloy for the hull instead of the traditional steel casing.

From a competition initiated by the Norwegian Ministry of Transport, Norled Transport Company is the winner. The company has been licensed to operate electric ferries on the route connecting the two villages Lavik and Oppedal from 2015 to 2025. According to Gizmag magazine, if the ferry route is successful, all traffic routes will be cut in the same way. Norway, with time to travel from shore to shore about 30 minutes, will use electric ferries.
