The mystery of a series of dead whale carcasses washed ashore was unexplainable

Tourists on a helicopter tour discovered the corpses of numerous elephants in Löngufjörur, west Iceland, on Thursday.

David Schwarzhans said that there could be more than 50 whales stuck.

David Schwarzhans, a pilot driving a Reykjavik helicopter, said he and his passengers had counted 50 long finned whales on the Snaefellsnes peninsula.

Mr. Schwarzhans said "there may be more. Some have been buried in the sand."

He said that the whales gathered at one point and described it as "a very sad scene".

Whales are thought to have swam to shore at the same time and die from dehydration. The phenomenon of elephants trapped in large numbers still has no convincing explanation. Most said that they did not understand why whales washed ashore and were so trapped.

At this island, local people also said last year that some whales were discovered to be ashore and trapped.
