Nearly 100 tons of fish carcasses washed ashore on the Russian coast

A large number of Pacific herring died of unknown causes that confused experts.

Hundreds of thousands of Pacific herring fishes drifted to the coast of Piltun Bay on the island of Sakhalin, Russia, Sun reported on June 15. The fish of about 93 tons is concentrated into 28 points, some of which are 30.5 cm thick, according to wildlife experts.

"The scale of Pacific herring died in the Gulf of Piltun very large. Many individuals of the same species of different ages die as an unusual phenomenon and can destroy a large part of the herring in the bay , " said the spokesman. members at the Ecological Watch of Sakhalin non-governmental organization said.

Experts are still investigating the cause of this phenomenon. Some samples were sent to Moscow for analysis."This is bad, it's like a herring genocide. I really wonder what happens to them," one resident shared.

Pacific herring has a scientific name, Clupea pallasii. They are considered key species, species that have a great influence in an ecosystem, because of their high fertility and interaction with many species of hunters and prey.
