The oldest wood fossil

Scientists say they have found the two oldest known fossil plant samples that humans have collected. A sample found in Newbrunn (Canada) and a sample found in France. Their dates are determined to be 397 million and 407 million years.

Both fossil wood samples are quite small, they belong to the herb with a height of 20 cm and a width of 3-5 cm.

According to scientists, these two samples of fossil wood existed in the early period of the Devonian period 397-407 million years ago. At that time the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air was reduced, leading to a reduction in the efficiency of water use of plants, so this herb must be modified to quickly adapt to the environment. They are considered to be the ancestors of large bodily plants common in the world today.
