The salvage can be tons of horrible waste than plastic waste on the ocean floor

There is an even more terrible kind of garbage than plastic bags and straws, science has just picked up tons of tons on the ocean floor.

Talking about plastic waste, everyone can understand how horrible they are. But most people only think about plastic bags, foam boxes, straws . without knowing there is still an extremely harmful kind of garbage, which is becoming a specter haunting the ocean today. Those are "ghost nets" - the type of fishing net that has been discarded in the ocean .

Recently, a non-profit organization has conducted a campaign to clean up the sea in one of the largest concentration areas of garbage, called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. After 25 days, they recovered more than 40 tons of garbage, including common plastic and fishing nets.

"Common plastic" here is actually full of plastics that are on land, from water bottles to children's toys. But the main point is that 5 tons of fishing nets are picked up. It is a tool for fishermen, but can survive in the ocean for decades. As it swept away, it grabbed the garbage around and formed a huge pile of trash, easily making the sea creatures catch it.

It is known that the campaign is called FloatEco, implemented by Ocean Voyages (OV). They plan to return here in 2020, to continue a three-month cleanup campaign.

Previously, OV conducted a drone survey in this area, to assess the situation and have a better strategy. They also recruited boats around the area, aiming to position them on the ghost grids thanks to the satellite system.

" Satellite technology is the key to our campaign, to be able to find the area that is suffering the most waste" - Mary Crowley, founder of OV.

"Ghost nets and plastic trash are the things that threaten the lives of marine life, and even affect our health."

Each year about 600,000 tons of fishing tools are left in the ocean.

According to Crowley, data show that about 600,000 tons of fishing tools are left underneath the ocean every year. And "thanks", 380,000 marine creatures were killed.

"It's really uncomfortable to sail through places that were only green and wild in the past few decades, now full of familiar garbage," Crowley said.

"There are many problems that need to be solved right away: cut down on single-use plastic, prevent plastic from getting out of the ocean, and most importantly, the consciousness of the public, businesses, and solutions to clean up breakthroughs. ".

OV cooperated with 2 experts from the University of Hawaii, Nikolai Maximenko and Jan Hafner, to jointly implement the FloatEco project. This is a research project funded by NASA, which aims to find solutions for more and more existing waste in the ocean, and rescue the current ecosystem.
