In fact, about 3.6% of adult Americans have sleepwalking at least once a year and 1% experience this condition twice a month.
This result is higher than previous studies conducted a decade ago, including the elderly Europeans with about 2% sleepwalking.
The study's findings also point to neurological diseases including depression and some antidepressants that cause sleepwalking. In addition, research can also provide some clues to treat disorders.
'Now the first thing we need to do is eliminate sleepwalking agents like insomnia and alcohol,' said Dr. Maurice Ohayon from Stanford Medical University. ' It is important that we tell people not to feel embarrassed when we are sleepwalking.'
