The spider web is 25 m long
Scientists have discovered the world's largest spider web in the island nation of Madagascar with a length of up to 25 m.
BBC said, the spider web stretches across two banks of a river. The spider creates a giant network of Caerostris Darwini. This is a completely new species for the scientific world. Due to its large size, the ' house ' of the spider can catch 30 or more insects at any one time.
The web stretches from one side of the river to the other.
This is the largest spider web that scientists ever knew by a living spider created.
Professor Ingi Agnarsson, director of the Animal Museum of Puerto Rico University in Puerto Rico, and a colleague discovered many Caerostris darwini spiders along the Namorona River on the island nation of Madagascar. In addition to the spider web of 25 m in length, the two experts also saw many other smaller networks.
Last year, scientists discovered a new species of spider called Nephila komaci in Africa and Madagascar. However, the maximum diameter of the networks they create is only 1 m.
'C. darwini Spider weaves the veil just above the water surface of rivers and lakes. It's an environment without any other spider species that can weave the net, 'Professor Agnarsson said.
The length of the network is up to 25 m.
The position between the two rivers allows the spider C. Darwini to catch insects flying above the water. To move from one side to the other, the spider had to release silk threads up to 25 meters long. Because of such a long distance, the fibers are strong and tough enough to withstand the weight of the spider and the prey.
Agnarsson said, he will continue to research to find out how spider C. darwini can move from one side of the river to the other when there is nothing to grip and it cannot fly. .
The findings are published in the journal Arachnology.
