There is no evidence that 'sex addiction' is included in the latest WHO list

Exactly, the disease is not a sex addiction, but a sexual behavior disorder similar in nature.

Recently, WHO has announced the latest update of the ICD-11 list (International Classification of Diseases). It is known that this is the first time that ICD-11 has been adjusted since 1990. And in this latest revision, there has been a sex-related disorder.

Then almost immediately, information flows quickly spread, like : "WHO listed sex addiction into pathological form" ; or "Sex addiction is now a mental illness" .

Sex addiction becomes psychological disease?

But not! It's not like that. In the ICD-11 list there are other recognized "addictions" , such as gambling addiction, drug addiction, or most recently addiction to games. As for sex, this list does not have the word "addiction" , but only one new disease is listed as "Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD).

Specifically, the list has an explanation of "coercion" as: "failure to control intense sexual impulses, urge to repeat sexual acts".

As a disorder, of course this is a serious health problem. However, it is not the same as "addiction" , and needs more research to confirm the mechanism of disease.

CSBD is "sex addiction"? The story is still controversial

According to Christian Lindmeier, a WHO-based spokesman in Geneva, the incidence of this disorder in ICD-11 is for patients to understand the situation, and seek help sooner.

CSBD is not like sex addiction - at least up to this point.

According to the WHO plan, CSD will soon be included in the national health care list in some countries, including the United Kingdom.

But in another development, doctors and psychologists are contemplating whether to consider CSBD and sex addiction as one. The reason is because its symptoms are not clear, does not make people dependent or "resistant" to using too much like alcohol and addictive substances.

"There is currently not enough evidence to put sex addiction into a mental illness" - quoted in the report of the American Society of Sexual Research and Research (AASECT).

When instinct becomes a serious problem

"Sexual addiction actually shows signs of conflict, inner struggle, stress and impotence in patients," said Jenner Bishop, sex addiction therapist.

"There are people who even have to constantly curse themselves -" I never do that again, definitely "; some people isolate themselves, let go of everything to be satisfied, and fall again into a state of despair ".

In ICD-11 there is no sex addiction, but CSBD - Compulsive sexual behavior disorder.

Some experts say that sex, technology, and level 3 movies have something in common, which is addictive. They just don't have "resistance" and "drug" symptoms.

"It affects the central nervous system like drugs," said Robert Lustig, a famous medical doctor in the US.

"The difference is that it does not affect the peripheral nervous system. But this does not mean it is not addiction. It is addiction, but there are no symptoms of drug resistance or medication."

In general, currently, there is no specific study of sex addiction - at least within the United States. Several local studies suggest that it may be affecting about 5% of the US population.

And finally, the point to remember is that in ICD-11 there is no sex addiction, but CSBD - Compulsive sexual behavior disorder. They are different, at least at the present time.

Some symptoms of CSBD in ICD-11:

  1. A person is too focused on repetitive sexual behaviors, to the extent that it is harmful to health, causing them to ignore other interests, activities and responsibilities.
  2. It is not possible to minimize the frequency of sex acts despite many efforts.
  3. Repeating sexual acts despite consequences without feeling satisfied.

The ICD is the foundation for identifying health statistics and trends globally, containing about 55,000 codes for diseases, injuries and death causes.

It allows health professionals to share health information on a global scale, helping the community better understand dangerous diseases and the potential for death.
