Extremely rare, so rare that no one has ever seen them, yet can become extinct next year. Which animal is it?

Hearing the word "dolphin" , I know what you will imagine. But really, dolphins are just a common name for many species. And you know, among the current dolphin species there is an extremely rare species, so rare that no one has ever heard of it or seen it. It was "rat dolphin" - vaquita porpoise.

The reason these rare fish are so simple is because their numbers are too small. This dolphin has only existed in the Gulf of California, but the number of species has decreased by 90% in the past 6 years.

Currently, according to experts, there are less than 30 dolphins and no more than 30 individuals in the world. And with this number, it is likely that the rat dolphin will become extinct in 2018.

"If we don't act, the dolphin will become extinct by 2018," said Maria Jose Villanueva, director of the International Nature Conservation Fund (WWF) in Mexico. "Losing vaquita, also losing part of Mexico."

Vaquita dolphins (Phocoena sinus) are listed as the most endangered in the whale. Previously, this title belongs to baiji - Chinese river dolphin (Lipotes vexillifer), but this animal has officially disappeared in 2007.

Dolphins vaquita have been found since 1958, and are impressed by their small appearance: females are only about 1.4m long, while males are 1.34m. This fish also has some very difficult characteristics: black "bruises" , curved lips, black branches . and so is called "panda" of the blue sea.

The decline of this fish originated in 1993, when people boosted the activity and number of fishing boats. In particular, the use of long nets sweeping the seabed is the main reason why this fish no longer lives. Estimates of those killer nets accidentally killed 700,000 marine animals.

With dolphins vaquita, in 1997, 567 individuals remained. By 2007, the number was only 150, and now it is less than 30.

Conscious of the seriousness, the Mexican government has banned fishermen from using fishing nets for two years since 2015. However, this ban is about to become ineffective.

Conservationists said an urgent plan should be urgently implemented, bringing the dolphin vaquita to a temporary reserve before considering further issues.

Currently the number of mouse dolphins is less than 30 individuals.

"We have to calculate very carefully, because this is an unprecedented severity," said Jorge Rickards, interim director of WWF Mexico.

Only time will tell if their plan is successful. But one thing is certain: if the government does not quickly restrict or prevent the indiscriminate fishing, the dark future of the dolphin is clear.
