In the next 9 months, a group of Greek conservationists will repair the Holy Church and open a stone tablet on the grave believed to be the burial and resurrection site of Jesus after his execution.

According to The Washington Post, to repair churches that are in danger of collapse due to weight, the team must infiltrate the ruins of a square-meter tomb from the first century called Holy Rock . They will have to clean the soot that has accumulated for centuries from the candles in the church. They also had to relocate the marble and then plastered the masonry.

In the center of the Holy Church in the heart of the ancient city of Jerusalem, conservationists will lift the smooth stone slab where millions of pilgrims once knelt down and pray to find out below. This is the first time in more than 200 years they consider inside the tomb. The ruins of the chiseled grave from the rock built above the church were shaken. Repairs were delayed for decades. After years of debate among the custodians of the project, the renovation project officially started in June.

Conservationists are not sure what they will find."This is the most lively place we have ever repaired , " said Antonia Moropoulou, who led the expert team at the National University of Technology in Athens, Greece.

The team explored the church and the tomb with ground-penetrating radar and laser scanning technology. They let unmanned aircraft carry cameras flying above the grave and spot a faulty trail on the rock face. According to them, the crack could be the result of pressure from the upper support pillars.

The Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem is one of the most famous religious buildings in the world with a deep basilica, filled with fuzzy alcoves, secret graves, chapels and golden statues. The church is said to be the place where Jesus died, undergoing burial and revival rites. Archaeological work at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher is limited due to the protection of the monks as well as a long tradition.
