Analyzing in detail the scientific progress, the benefits brought by technology and the scientific trends of the 21st century, the financial website Insider Monkey ranked the 12 most advanced countries in science.

Insider Monkey ranked countries based on the h-index score of their scientific papers in 2021. The h-index measures the aggregate impact of scholarly output.

Data is taken from the SCImago Country Rankings and from the World Bank.

1. America

Number of scientific articles: 726,552.

Total h-Index: 2.711

Currently, the US occupies the number 1 position, far surpassing other countries in science by a very large margin.

The top research institutions are Harvard University, Stanford University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Top US corporations involved in R&D include Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, and Meta.

Number of scientific articles: 243,792.

Total h-Index: 1.707

The most prestigious research institutions in the UK are the University of Oxford, University College London and the University of Cambridge.

3. Germany

Number of scientific articles: 208,210

Total h-Index: 1.498

Germany is known for 28 Nobel Prize winners in Physics.

Leading research institutions include the Helmholtz Association, the Max Planck Institute for Research and Expertise, and the Leibniz Association.

4. Canada

Number of scientific articles: 130,786

Total h-Index: 1.381

Canada has a strong focus on agricultural, medical and environmental sciences and has a world-class education system that produces some of the best researchers in the world.

The top three institutions are the University of Toronto, the University of British Columbia, and McGill University.

5. France

France's contributions to global scientific efforts are significant in the fields of physics, medicine, and chemistry.

Some of the leading institutions include the French National Center for Scientific Research, the National Institute of Health and Medical Research, and the Sorbonne University.

6. Netherlands

The top three research institutes are Utrecht University, the University of Amsterdam and the Hubrecht Institute – globally recognised for their academic prestige.

The Netherlands is also considered one of the most advanced countries in agricultural science.

The top three research institutions in the country are the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney and the University of Queensland.

The University of Melbourne has eight Nobel laureates in scientific research.

Australia has many corporations engaged in R&D (research and development) activities.
