Treasures Viking 1,200 years old revealed under the neck

A Norwegian climber accidentally spotted a sword that was more than a millennium old while walking on an ancient road.

Discovered the ancient Viking sword

According to CNN, the county council of Hordaland, southwestern Norway confirmed the intact blade, dating back to about 750, the early period of Viking society, an era in Nordic history, from about 793 to 1066. The Vikings went everywhere devastating, plundering, trafficking from England to Russia and even Asia, forming the feudal regime in Europe.

"It is unusual to find an artifact that has survived since Viking was so intact. It is still good if sharpened , " said Per Morten Ekerhovd, the county's archaeological manager.

Goran Olsen, an outdoor walker, found the sword when he stopped at Haukeli, about 250km north of Oslo, a favorite fishing and hunting destination for many.

The sword is rusty, lying beneath several rocks on a famous ancient road that crosses a plateau between western and eastern Norway. The mountains here are covered with dew and snow every 6 months, not affected by humidity in the summer, which can be a great condition for preserving the sword, Ekerhovd said.

The sword lost its grip, was about 77cm long, wrought iron. This is a high-value sword in the Viking era because at that time, ironwork was very expensive. It is possible that the sword belongs to a rich man.

The artifact was handed over to the Bergen University Museum for preservation, next spring, an expedition will set out to study the area of the sword.

"We are really happy because he found the sword and gave it back to us , " Ekerhovd said. "It is an important model, helping to clarify the early days of the Viking era".
