RT reported yesterday that hunters discovered the sword in the Skaftárhreppur region, Iceland, the area that had experienced heavy flooding last year. The sword was almost intact except for the broken tip of the sword. The body of the sword is slightly curved and sometimes rusty due to years of outdoor exposure. However, the pieces of wood could still be clearly seen from the hilt.
The group of hunters handed the sword to the Iceland Cultural Heritage Authority. Experts say this is an interesting discovery from the Viking era and originated from an undiscovered residential area or grave."We determined that the sword was born around 950 or earlier. We are very excited because this discovery is the 23rd Viking sword discovered in Iceland" , RT quoted Kristín Huld Sigurðardóttir, director. Iceland Cultural Heritage Agency.
"It is possible that some traces of the scabbard still remain in the tongue, but we will know more after the conservation expert carefully examined it , " Sigurðardóttir said.
Arni Bjorn Valdimarsson, a member of the hunter group, said the sword might belong to Ingólfur Arnarso n, the founder of Iceland in 870.
