Turn dirty soil into park chair

A US company found a way to turn used diapers into park benches and many other products.

The diapers will need several hundred years to decompose after humans use them. According to calculations by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), on average each child in the US uses about 8,000 diapers before sitting on the toilet. Each year Americans throw about 3.7 million tons of used diapers. This number is only 350,000 tons in 1970.

MSNBC reported that Terracycle - a garbage recycling company based in New Jersey, USA - came up with the idea of creating useful products from diapers that were used. In the first stage, the dirty, toxic substances in diapers and diapers will be neutralized. The outer plastic cover will be separated from the inner paper.

After disinfection of the absorbent material, it can be used to produce animal products or to mix into cement. Plastic diapers will be made into many products such as park benches, tables for picnic activities. Certainly those who walk in the park will not be able to know which chair is made of scrap.

To be able to handle large-scale used diapers, Terracycle seeks funding from a large company. Huggies, one of the diapers manufacturers, has agreed to fund Terracycle's recycling project. Under the agreement between Terracycle and Huggies, those who bring diapers to Terracycle's recycling facility will be paid 10% of the value of the new diaper.
