The volcanic eruption of November 21 last year caused lava layers to be sprayed in large quantities, forming a small island located 1,000km south of Tokyo, on the western edge of the Thai Binh fire belt. Ocean. The island was later named Niijma. At this time, it is located about 200m away from Nishino-shima island.

Based on the satellite images recorded in the past, experts said that Niijma island is still expanding the area and encroaching on the island next to it. Satellite images recorded on March 30 from Landsat 8 satellite show that the size of Niijima island has surpassed Nishino-shima island.
The increase in Niijima's size made the two islands nearly merge into one, the width of the two islands was about 1,000 meters. According to Live Science, the island is currently 60 meters above sea level.
The phenomenon of Niijma island expansion has been observed since December last year. During this time, officials of the volcanic island's management and monitoring department erupted, saying that it was connected at two points to Nishino-shima, an uninhabited volcanic island of the Ogasawara island chain. . According to the observation of Japanese coast, the white and ash clouds still appear on this island, the lava layer continues to erupt, so the area of the island will also expand.

Similar volcanic eruptions in the years 1970-1980 created many small islands in Japan. However, these islands have been partially or completely ingested by the ocean.
