Vietnam first deciphered the rice genome for the first time

On August 28 in Hanoi, the Ministry of Science and Technology in collaboration with the United Kingdom Embassy organized a workshop to publish the results of gene decoding research on a number of Vietnamese native rice varieties with the participation of numerous scientists, managers and businesses.

'Decoding the genome of a number of Vietnamese native rice varieties' is a project within the framework of the international cooperation program on science and technology between the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Council for Life and Public Science Research. Biotechnology of the United Kingdom.

The Ministry of Science and Technology assigned the research task to the Vietnam Institute of Agricultural Genetics. A group of Vietnamese scientists from rice research institutes have collaborated with UK scientists to decode 36 Vietnamese native rice varieties. The project is implemented within 30 months, from January 2011 to June 2013.

Speaking at the workshop, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tran Viet Thanh said that this is the first time Vietnam has completely deciphered the complete genome of a very important high-class plant, rice.

The complete decoding of the rice genome has opened up a new research direction on genomics and bioinformatics applications for sequencing genomes to help research institutes, universities and breeders select varieties for use in Research on genetic resources conservation, gene function determination as well as selection of varieties with high productivity, quality, and resistance to pests and adverse biological and abiotic conditions.

'Through this cooperation project, Vietnamese scientists have approached the methods of decoding advanced genomes, the most modern equipment in the world, and then proceeded to actively solve the sequence and build the browsing genomes, creating a full genome database of Vietnamese rice varieties, " stressed Deputy Minister Tran Viet Thanh.

Deputy Minister Tran Viet Thanh said that together with the UK, the Ministry of Science and Technology in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will support Vietnamese scientists to cooperate with British scientists. continue to decipher rice varieties with important characteristics, build a database for research and selection of rice varieties, proceed to build a national laboratory for rice genome analysis and rice Other crops of Vietnam.

Ambassador of the United Kingdom in Vietnam Antony Stokes highly appreciated the results of the scientific and technological cooperation program between Vietnam and the United Kingdom, typically the project "Decoding genome of some rice varieties. native of Vietnam ".

The effective cooperation between the two countries in the field of science and technology has contributed to deepening the good cooperation relationship which has been cultivated by the two peoples over the past 40 years.

'I am very proud because the UK has made small contributions to the success of the project. In the coming time, UK scientists will continue to cooperate with Vietnam in phase 2 of the project "Decoding genomes of some Vietnamese native varieties" " Ambassador Antony Stokes affirmed. .

Associate Professor, Dr. Le Huy Ham, Director of Vietnam Agricultural Genetics Institute, said that Phase 2 of the Project will continue to decode the genome of 600 rice varieties; exploiting and using existing data, training human resources to fully master decoding, exploiting and using genome tools in selecting and creating plant varieties
