Vietnam is losing its biodiversity

While many other rare species have been severely degraded, many alien organisms such as yellow snail, mimosa . have invaded the environment causing adverse consequences. with the environment and biodiversity.

The total number of endangered wild fauna and flora species in our country is 882 species (recorded in the Red Book of 2007), an increase of 161 species compared to the previous edition of the Red Book (1992 - 1996).

There are 9 species of animals (2-horn rhino, Gray cow, Taplet, Otter, Common carp, Japanese eel, Low-bodied snakehead, Star deer, Tomato crocodile) and 2 comedy species considered extinct in the wild.

Many other rare and precious creatures have been severely reduced. The rapid increase in forest cover is a good sign but half of the increase in forest area is plantation forest and the restoration of biodiversity value is not high. Meanwhile, primary forest is not much and continues to decline.

Deforestation causes ecological imbalance, threatening biodiversity.

Experts in the field of biodiversity said: The reason for this situation is that in Vietnam, 70% of the population has livelihoods that depend heavily on biodiversity resources. Illegal and uncontrolled exploitation of timber and non-timber forest products has been and continues to be uncontrollable for all types of forests. About one fifth of the Vietnamese population relies on fishing but due to the increase in consumption, plus ineffective fishing management leads to over-exploitation and unsustainable exploitation.

On the other hand, due to the rapid economic change, the consumption model of society has also changed and the expanded transportation network has made many areas rich in biodiversity more accessible to the market. outside school. These changes have led to excessive exploitation depleting biodiversity resources.

The invasion of alien species such as yellow snail, mimosa . causes bad consequences for the environment and biodiversity . These alien species overwhelm, eliminate and degrade species and genetic resources, break down the structure and function of the ecosystem, destroy crops, reduce crop yields, livestock, even Lice affect human health. In addition, the polluted environment caused by different wastes that are not treated and dumped directly into the outside environment is a threat to biodiversity such as death, reducing the number of individuals and cockroaches. further destroying the habitat and habitat of many wildlife species.

Moreover, Vietnam is a country especially sensitive to the effects of global climate change. Ecosystems that are fragmented will inevitably react less to these changes and may not be able to avoid the loss of organisms at very high speeds.
