Vietnam has a natural forest area of ​​about 10.3 million hectares, accounting for 31% of the total territory of the country. However, only 0.57 million hectares of primary forests exist.

In addition to the protection measures already included in the respective laws, Vietnam has established conservation areas (special-use forests with a total area of ​​2.2 million hectares), participating in national conferences. International as well as cooperation with the international donor community. However, the conservation of diverse species areas still faces many challenges. According to scientific data, about 700 species of plants and animals in Vietnam are currently threatened at the national level, of which 300 species are globally threatened.

Through a new project signed with GTZ, Vietnam hopes to strengthen the country's capacity to protect biodiversity and forest ecosystems, especially improving legal and financial conditions. Main, technical, professional and personnel for this activity at the national level and in protected areas.

The Nature Conservation Department under the General Department of Forestry - MARD will coordinate with GTZ to implement the project. Phase 1 of the project is implemented in 3 years (from August 2010 to July 2013) with a budget of 3 million Euro. The main office of the project is located in Hanoi. The project will be implemented in many pilot areas including Ba Be National Park and Na Hang Nature Reserve (Bac Can and Tuyen Quang provinces), Pu Hu Nature Reserve and Pu Luong (Thanh Hoa province). , Bach Ma National Park (Thua Thien Hue province) and the buffer zones of these protected areas.
