Vietnam joined the New Plant Variety Protection Association
Yesterday (January 23), the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development announced Vietnam as the 63rd member of the International Association for the Protection of New Plant Varieties (UPOV) and distributed the Protection Title of the Plant Variety first.
Vietnam has become an official member of UPOV under the 1991 Convention since December 24, 2006. Among the 10 ASEAN countries, only Singapore and Vietnam are participating in this association.
UPOV encourages the development of new plant varieties based on clear principles of intellectual property rights for plant breeders. In order to be protected, the plant variety needs to meet the following conditions: different from the widely known plant species and species, fully uniform and stable.
Participation in UPOV facilitates the effective implementation of plant variety protection by cooperation with member countries with experience in plant variety protection.
