The Center for Laser Technology of the Vietnam Institute of Technology Application has become the first unit in the country to successfully manufacture a laser engraving machine, which is only half the price of imported ones.

The product was born after 2 years of research and manufacture, and was supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology for funding.

Mr. Le Dinh Nguyen, deputy director of the center, said the machine has the effect of carving pictures, letters, logos, or drawings on any non-metallic materials such as wood, cloth, leather, rubber and glass. . Products will have great potential applications in areas such as handicraft, mosaic, garment, seal making, souvenirs .

With this machine, users can engrave their wedding photos or portraits on wooden photo frames. Tailors can create textures, patterns floating on a piece of leather or cow cloth. Companies and organizations will have their logo displayed on glass blocks for souvenirs.

The product is particularly useful in the field of pearl mosaic. At present, in order to get the works of art, the artist has to use his hand to engrave the model and then put the pieces on it. But with this machine, the model will be automatically engraved with lasers and the artist only performs the mating step. Efforts will be greatly reduced, but the efficiency increases.

According to Mr. Nguyen, a medium sized engraving machine with engraving speed of 10 seconds per 1 cm2, on objects with a maximum size of 18x23 cm. The machine can be engraved on a plane or round face. With software written in Vietnamese, users can take any image in the archive and choose one of 3 engraving styles: embossing, carving and enveloping. It also allows adjusting the scanning speed and resolution of the image.

Since all design, processing, and programming are done in the country, the product will allow full ownership of the technology. While with foreign products, when there are errors, failures, the owner must send the machine to the place of production to repair or invite experts. To date, the device has been used at a seal production facility and has been ordered by several other units.

Nguyen said the center is preparing procedures for trademark registration and intellectual property rights. In the near future, the center will also launch a new product, the metal laser engraving machine, which allows to engrave logos, letters and images on metal materials, such as pliers, scissors .
