Tens of thousands of health workers will spread throughout these areas over the next few days to implement the polio vaccination program. WHO hopes to eradicate paralysis in Afghanistan and Pakistan through this program.

This year, five polio cases were reported in Afghanistan and two in Pakistan. According to Fadela Chaib, WHO spokesman, 14 million Pakistani children and 2 million Afghan children will be vaccinated this time.

Oliver Rosenbauer of WHO said that the medical teams who implemented the campaign not only had geographic difficulties but were also unsafe because these areas were quite dangerous.

WHO launched a worldwide anti-polio campaign in 1988 and attempts to eradicate the virus. But the program failed two years ago when northern Nigeria stopped vaccination and the polio virus spread to countries without polio.

Currently, the WHO believes that this campaign is effective and the goal of eradicating paralysis globally is at hand.
