Yahoo opens the door to bring RSS into e-mail
Yesterday, the world's largest online service company announced testing and only released it as an invitation to read RSS tools in Yahoo Mail service. This is part of the "RSS Everywhere" campaign that they started implementing 2 years ago.
Users can select "feeds" ( sites that offer RSS features such as BBC, The New York Times or blogs ) in the available list or manually enter arbitrary links. Mailboxes are also equipped with increased features such as automatic forward (forward) content via e-mail and a light notification when there is a new RSS content. In particular, the "news stream" allows people to view all the information of the feeds in order from the latest to the older content.
Yahoo also offers a "Feed Alert" service, a feature built on the Yahoo Alerts platform to notify e-mail, IM (instant messaging), or mobile phones whenever a blog or a feed which they registered has updated and changed.
Scott Gatz, Yahoo's director of personalization services, explained the decision: "RSS in email is a bold move. People spend a lot of time on e-mail, so why are we?" do not provide the content they need right there in. Second, when reading RSS, they may want to send their friends what they have read and find interesting. and attracting hundreds of millions of customers using Yahoo Mail, we have to 'follow' to meet their needs. "
The goal of "RSS Everywhere" (RSS everywhere) was initiated by Yahoo in January 2004 when it was included in My Yahoo. Microsoft is also working on a similar plan and claims it will integrate RSS in Windows Vista and Windows Live operating systems. Many users are now also waiting for Google to adopt the technology and put RSS into Gmail mailboxes.
RSS technology has 3 standards:
Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91)
RDF Site Summary (RSS 0.9 and 1.0)
Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0.0)
This technology allows Internet users to subscribe to sites that provide RSS feeds, often with content that is constantly updated and changed. To use, the website owner will create or integrate specialized software (such as a content management system), capable of displaying a summary with a link to a complete article. This information is distributed as an XML file, with multiple names such as RSS feed, webfeed, RSS stream or RSS channel.
