Why do male chimpanzees like adventure?
The villagers of Bossou, Guinea, often saw male chimpanzees entering the garden stealing papaya or other human-grown fruits instead of gathering in the forest.
The villagers of Bossou, Guinea, often saw male chimpanzees entering the garden stealing papaya or other human-grown fruits instead of gathering in the forest.
In observing this behavior, British researcher Kimberley Hockings and colleagues from Stirling University noted that these " thieves " are more favored by female chimpanzees of reproductive age.
This behavior was observed in 2002 by Gaku Ohasi of the University of Tokyo in Gombe National Park, Tanzania. Sharing the prey captured the male chimpanzees to attract the attention of the chimpanzees.
Researcher Hockings and colleagues claim that sharing stolen fruits increases the value of male chimpanzees and helps them find partners more easily . They are given special care by chimpanzees, like catching lice, more than others.
'We think that male chimpanzees seek to show their courage to the others in the group, especially for those chimpanzees. This recklessness is considered a way of conquering your partner, ' Mr. Hockings explained.
