WIMAX: Star at Computex 2007
Participating in Asia's largest IT Exhibition - Computex 2007, technology companies have raced to demonstrate all the latest products, marking an era in which video, mobile and Internet are super fast but also super cheap.
Although a number of users have begun to be exposed to television, video and email on 3G phones, but the downfall still occurs as a result and drives them crazy.
However, according to the firm statement of Mr. Tsai Chang-yi, director of Taiwan's wireless equipment maker Gemtek Technology, this situation will no longer last.
" Complaints like this will soon disappear. Users will be able to enjoy" naughty "TV shows on the phone screen, and that day is coming ," he said.
The key to reversing the situation, according to Tsai, is WiMax wireless technology. WiMax, short for Global Interconnected Microwave Access, is a technology similar to Wi-Fi but has a wider coverage area and stronger data signals.
With WiMax, the data transfer rate of mobile bandwidth will be equal to that of a laptop at 2 Mbps, which is 8 times faster than the current 3G network.
Not only that, the cost of building network infrastructure and WiMax broadcasting stations is also quite low, resulting in very low service costs.
According to expert estimates, the cost to build a WiMax broadcast station is approximately NT $ 2 million, or US $ 60,600, which is only a quarter of the cost of a 3G base station.
And yet, an undeniable advantage of WiMax is the very far coverage. In theory, a WiMax broadcast station can radiate signals within a range of up to 10 km, although in urban areas, the actual number is only 3-4 km. But anyway, it was too ideal compared to 3G's 1 km figure.
Especially, according to Mr. Tsai, the application and deployment of WiMax is happening especially fast in India, Pakistan and the Middle East, where infrastructure is much worse than that of industrial countries.
A giant who actively promoted WiMax is Intel chip giant. Together with Motorola, Motorola is investing very generously on WiMax, hoping it is a lucrative market.
" WiMax systems are gradually taking shape. The year 2008-2009 will witness a remarkable growth of WiMax, " predicts Gemtek's anonymity expert.
" Up to this point, the number of orders sent to Gemtek has doubled compared to last year, to NT $ 3 billion (US $ 90.6 million) ".
According to preliminary statistics of Computex 2007 organizers, this year's exhibition attracted up to 100,000 local visitors and 32,000 foreign customers to shop. The sales amount has reached approximately 14.5 billion USD.
