Bloody red rain poured down the parking lot in the industrial town of Norilsk, Siberia, on July 3, according to Live Science. Rainwater dyed the cars red, creating many red puddles on the road and making the town look like a horror movie.

Some locals fear the local rain is a sign of the end of the world, according to Express. But the real cause comes from the operation of the Nornickelmetallurgical factory in the town. The plant is shaving a large amount of iron oxide residue (iron rust) from the factory floor and ceiling to improve the working and safety environment. However, the factory worker overshadowed the rusty lid. The wind rustled through the parking lot, and the raining rain mixed with rust so it was red like blood, according to the factory representative.

Red rain is not rare and happens every few years. According to the US Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), most of the red rain originates from dust storms in the Sahara desert, being swept by strong winds to Europe and the Mediterranean. Sometimes, the dust rotates under a thundercloud, mixed with rain and falls to the ground with a light red color.

Different dust particles lead to different colors of rain and blood red rain only occurs when more iron oxide floats among the dust in the air. Iron oxide is naturally produced when iron and oxygen come into contact with each other, but rarely appears in large quantities in the air like the incident earlier this week in Russia.
