While mapping the seabed, scientists at the University of New Hampshire (USA) found a 100-million-year-old crater near Johnson atoll.

The peak of the giant 'monster' reaching a height of 1,100m from a deep seabed of 5,100m, according to PTI, led data collected by American experts.

Experts have used multi-beam echo technology to measure depth, helping to build a detailed picture of the seabed of research.

Most of these underwater peaks cannot be found by conventional satellite data.

Volcanoes are located within the continental shelf of the United States, about 300km from Jarvis Island, meaning the US has legal powers to conduct further research on volcanoes, such as analyzing sediments and rocks that form mountains fire.
