Shark sanctuary on the Pacific Ocean

The Marshall Islands government decided to establish the largest shark sanctuary in the world, nearly 2 million square kilometers wide. This Pacific island nation plans to ban shark fishing on its waters and trade in shark food, Pravada said.

The Marshall Islands territorial sea area is devoted to shark sanctuaries by the size of Indonesia, Saudi Arabia or Mexico. Senator Tony de Broom said ' Our country is small but the largest protected shark area in the world '.

In conservation areas, if you accidentally catch or catch sharks, you must drop into the ocean. Penalties for violators are very high, up to $ 300,000.

The tourism industry, mainly scuba diving, is the main source of income for the Marshall Islands, with a population of 68,000. Sharks and fish species such as rays are not only threatened by fishermen but also because their living space is shrinking. About one-third of sharks are recorded in the Red Book, meaning they are on the verge of extinction.

The reproductive rate of sharks is too slow, they are very vulnerable to catching and many other factors. The Marshall Islands government decided to follow the example of the Palau archipelago, having held a shark sanctuary for two years now.

It is known that in the future, another shark sanctuary will be opened in the Bahamas.
