10,000 people may have died due to Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines

Local police said the strongest typhoon in Haiyan was said to have claimed the lives of about 10,000 people in the central province of Leyte, where the storm's center passed with the most destructive power.

"We had a meeting last night with the provincial governor and other officials. The Governor said, according to their estimates, about 10,000 people were killed , " AFP quoted the chief of the Elmer Soria area. said in Tacloban, the capital of Leyte province, it was also the place most affected by the storm.

According to Mr. Soria, most of the victims killed were sunk or collapsed against the body. About 70-80% of the area lies on the path of Typhoon Haiyan in the province of Leyte destroyed.

Tacloban leader, Mr. Tescon Lim, also said that the number of people killed in this city alone "could be up to 10,000 people".

Earlier, the Philippine Red Cross, an estimated 1,000 people lost their lives in Tacloban and another 200 on Samar Island nearby.

Philippine Interior Minister Mar Roxas was in Tacloban yesterday and said it was too early to know exactly how many people died after the typhoon Haiyan.

"Rescue work is still ongoing. We expect the number of casualties will be very high," Roxas said. "All systems, utilities of modern life - communication, electricity, water - are paralyzed. Communication is also cut off, because there is no way to contact people far away."

Rescue teams say they face a lot of difficulties in distributing food and water to the damaged areas, because roads are sores and trees fall across.

Tacloban airport looks like a muddy area filled with garbage, overturned cars and crumpled roofs. The glass windows of the airport tower were also broken.

At least 138 people are confirmed dead, with at least 118 people alone on Leyte Island.

President Benigno Aquino said the casualties "would be higher" but did not give any figures or estimates. He said the government's top priority is to re-establish the electricity and water system, information in isolated areas to serve the relief of people.
