2 buildings were buried by landslides in China, leaving 59 people missing

Many buildings collapsed and buried, 59 people disappeared after the landslide in an industrial zone in Shenzhen City, China on December 20.

Police received information about the landslide in Liuxi Industrial Park , northwest of Shenzhen City at 11h40 on December 20, Xinhua News Agency reported.

7 fire trucks and 30 firefighters were sent to the scene and were looking for trapped victims.

Rescue workers said a building in the industrial zone and some houses were damaged in the landslide. BBC said, 22 buildings were buried, including two dormitories for workers.

Meanwhile, according to Xinhua, at least 59 people are believed to be missing.

An industrial park worker named Tian said his boss and his family members were buried in rubble. Only Tian and driver of the escape manager family.

Shenzhen Fire Department said the landslide affected the northern suburbs of the city on a large scale.

AP quoted Li Yikang, the deputy secretary of Shenzhen's Party Committee, said more than 900 people were evacuated from the scene. According to Mr. Li, about 1,500 people are participating in rescue efforts.

Ren Jiguang, deputy director of the Shenzhen Public Security Bureau, answered CCTV that most people have been evacuated to safety before the landslide occurred.

The Beijing Youth Daily quoted a local resident as saying the land in the area had been dug up at a construction site in the past two years, forming a 100m high mound. It rained in Shenzhen on December 20, causing the road to be muddy.
