About 40 houses in the Tan Ma village were buried after one side of the mountain slumped, forming a pile of rocks about 2km long, blocking a river. Authorities fear about 100 people are trapped in landslides.

Mao's district government said the units that responded to the "first-level catastrophic geological disaster" were on their way to the landslide. There has not been a full assessment of the total level of landslide.

Xinhua said "a part of a mountain" in Tibet and the autonomous region of the Jiang, Sichuan, collapsed at 6 am this morning. Landslides are a common danger in rural and mountainous areas in China, especially when there is heavy rain.

At least 12 people were killed in a January landslide in a hotel in central Hubei province. In October 2016, at least 8 people died in landslides in eastern China after the country suffered heavy rains from Typhoon Megi.
