2015: The rise of volcanoes
2015 is a special year for the unusual activities of volcanoes around the world. According to an estimate of about 1,500 active volcanoes, there are about 50 eruptions every year, pushing large amounts of steam, ash, poison gas, and lava flying into the surrounding areas.
This year there are some prominent erupting volcanoes including Mount Etna in Italy, Wolf on the Galapagos Islands, Cotopaxi in Ecuador, Villarrica in Chile, Hunga Tonga - Hunga Ha'apai in Tonga, Mount Sinabung in Indonesia, Piton de la Fournaise on the island of Réunion, Kilauea in Hawaii, Momotombo in Nicaragua, Colima in Mexico, and Calbuco in Chile. The images below show the diversity of volcanic activities on Earth in the past year.
