This is the second mastodon fossil found on the farm over the past 30 years. The couple who owned the land then handed over the bone to paleontologists at the University of Iowa to study. The couple's identity was not disclosed to prevent fossil hunters from entering their property.
"A few weeks ago, we received a notice that people found fossils underneath a small river in the farm. The landlord contacted and sent photos to us. After paleontologists arrived To collect and analyze fossils, I can confirm that it is the jaw of a mastodon , " said Tiffany Adrain, Manager of the Paleontological Archives of the University of Iowa.
