3-layer DVD compatible with both DVD and HD-DVD
Toshiba and Memory-Tech announced the successful production of a 3-layer DVD disc compatible with both regular DVD players and HD-DVD players.
Toshiba's new 3-layer DVD technology and Memory technology are expected to allow film producers to integrate both the standard resolution version and the high-definition version of the same movie into one unit. DVD. Thus, users will not have to buy the DVD of the same movie if they want to convert from regular DVD to HD-DVD.
Previously, Toshiba and Memory have also successfully co-produced a dual-layer DVD disc compatible with both standard DVD players and HD-DVD players. This disc has been released for sale in Japan. The third layer added to this optical disc technology will help increase the amount of content saved on the disk.
The new DVD will have two layers to store DVD content and an HD-DVD compatible disc. Each layer of the new DVD series can store up to 2 hours of standard definition movies and 4 hours of high resolution movies.
Before being launched in the market, Toshiba and Memory's new optical disc line must receive DVD Forum approval. Later this year Toshiba will submit this product to the forum. If successful, this series will launch in the coming year.
