The earthquake occurred at 1721 local time (13 51 minutes GMT). Many buildings in the area were damaged.
The epicenter of the earthquake near Borazjan, about 60km from the Russian-built Bushehr nuclear facility.
There have been some concerns about the possibility of leaking radioactive material from this nuclear facility to the Gulf. However, no information is available on the damage to this nuclear power plant.
Scientists say Iran lies on some stratigraphic faults, so many earthquakes occur. The terrible earthquake of 2003 in the southern city of Bam has killed 26,000 people and destroyed all of the old city walls.
