Two strong earthquakes occurred in Iran on August 11, killing 180 people and injuring 1,500 after rescue workers dug dozens of villages all night.

Thousands of people left their homes or stood outside after the earthquake on August 11, accompanied by at least 40 aftershocks in the northwest region of the country.

Officials said the number of casualties may continue to increase, because some seriously injured people may not survive, and many others are trapped in ruins that have not been rescued. Rescue work takes place in the night so it is extremely difficult.

The quake caused 6 villages to be destroyed and about 60 other villages were destroyed.

Photos posted on Iranian news sites show that many of the victims were lying on the floor of a house in Ahar town. The wounded are being treated in the crowded outdoor area. Many other photos show that many buildings collapsed and cars were crushed by walls and bricks.

Iran is on the main fault lines, so it has suffered strong earthquakes in recent years, such as the 2003 magnitude 6.6 earthquake, which caused the historic city of Bam in the southeast to collapse and more than 25,000 people die.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake on August 11 was 6.4 times rich, centered 60km northeast of Tabriz and below the depth of 9.9km. The second magnitude 6.3 earthquake, a distance from TP. Tabriz 49km northeast and the same depth. The second earthquake is 11 minutes away from the first battle.
