Double earthquake struck Sichuan, China, 12 people were killed

Consecutive two powerful earthquakes of 5.2 and 6 degrees were recorded in Sichuan province, southwest China, causing at least 12 people to die and 134 injured.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said it recorded two earthquakes in 30 minutes in Sichuan province, China, on the evening of June 17, according to Reuters.

The agency also warned of the possibility of damage to the area's human resources and buildings.

The center is located about 12km from Nam Khe town. The first earthquake was estimated to be 6 degrees strong. The second earthquake occurred nearly 30 minutes later with the power recorded as 5.2 degrees.

The focus of the earthquake is quite shallow, about 10km underground. Earthquakes following this model often cause great human and property losses, according to the AP.

Chinese media described tremors spreading to many major cities in the region, including Sichuan provincial capital Chengdu and Chongqing metropolis.

The Chinese Earthquake Agency (CENC) also confirmed that the first earthquake occurred at 22:55 and there were many aftershocks. The agency said the second earthquake occurred at 23:36, near Yibin City, with a focus at a depth of 16km.

According to the AP, at least 12 people were killed and 134 injured were recorded in the quake this time. The image spread on social networks shows many buildings in cities in Sichuan appear cracks, people panic poured into the street.
