Most people died in Min district, AFP reported. In addition to those killed, 600 were injured and 14 were still missing.

Nearly 3,000 firefighters, police, soldiers and local government officials were sent to the area affected by the earthquake. Rescue efforts were difficult due to landslides, while roads were closed due to heavy rain from the previous days.

Two seismic episodes of 5.9 and 5.6 Richter scale occurred at 745 am and 9:12 am on July 22 (Beijing time) in Gansu province, leading to landslides buried in built houses sketchy of the local people. The images from the scene show that many houses are only ruins.

An official at Gansu province earthquake agency said more than 1,200 buildings collapsed and 21,000 others were seriously damaged. 371 aftershocks were recorded after a double earthquake.

A pharmaceutical factory worker in Min district said he saw blocks that were strongly shaken when an earthquake struck.

"I was in the workshop. I felt a great shaking and so I ran to the factory yard immediately , " said the man named Ma. "My factory has only one floor. When I came to the yard, I saw an 18-storey building, the highest in the district, shaking strongly, especially the 18th floor."

Earthquakes often occur in most areas of western China. A magnitude 6.6 earthquake in Sichuan province earlier this year killed 200 people. The incident occurred five years after the earthquake caused nearly 90,000 people to die in the same province.
