Vibration occurs in the area 70km east of the coastal city of Arica. It is also near the border between Chile and Peru.

Chilean authorities have not given information about the magnitude of the earthquake.

In April, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck near the Chilean capital, Santiago, to evacuate coastal residents to avoid a possible tsunami.

Chile is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, so it often faces major earthquakes. In September 2015, an earthquake of 8.3 magnitude caused tsunamis that killed 15 people in the country.

Earlier, the biggest earthquake in Chile occurred in 2010. The 8.8-magnitude earthquake caused more than 500 deaths.
