AMD is about to release the new Opteron
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) is expected to market Opteron "Rev. F" dual-core version on August 15 to compete with Intel in the server chip market.
Major server distributors such as HP, IBM and Sun Microsystems plan to use "Rev. F" on large servers and workstations to enhance multi-core processing, virtualization and performance. Compared with current Opteron lines.
Although AMD chips account for a quarter of the server market, the Opteron series has only recently been launched by the company and does not have a worthy position. Revenue from Opteron in the second quarter of 2006 increased by 141% over the same period last year, contributing significantly to AMD's quarterly total revenue of $ 89 million.
Despite great efforts in recent times, according to analysts, AMD has not been able to "outperform" Intel in the server market unless it converts from a 90-nm technology platform to 65. -nm, and from 2-core chip to 4-core chip.
Meanwhile, Intel began using the 65-nm design for Core 2 Duo chips, including Woodcrest, Conroe (for desktops), and Merom (for laptops). The company also plans to release a four-core Xeon server chip version - "Clovertown" (codename) and a 4-core desktop chip "Kentsfield" later this year.
