America is building the world's largest camera
California astronomers, the US are building the world's largest car to put up in Chile. The task of the machine is to capture panorama pictures of parts of the universe to record unusual movements or phenomena.
The camera is 2 stories tall and is placed in a private room at the SLAC National Acceleration Test Center. This camera is a collection of 20 boxes each corresponding to a 144 megapixel camera - 6 times more than a regular high-end digital camera.
Telescope LSST giant.
Parts of the camera were made of different locations: the Brookhaven New York National Laboratory sensor and the optical lens at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, the filter was imported from France. . However, the assembly will take place at SLAC after 2 years.
The camera is 2 stories high.
Let the camera work and get the right focus for every part, even the smallest, must be set correctly with a 2 micron error, equal to 1/20 of human hair thickness. In addition, when entering the camera room, scientists must wear protective gear to not stain the equipment here.
It is expected that astronomers can use this giant device to study the universe by 2020.
