The US Department of Energy has officially put Summit into operation after months of development, becoming the nation with the strongest supercomputer in the world.

When operating at the highest capacity, Summit 's maximum performance is up to 200 petaflop - ie 200 trillion calculations per second. The most powerful supercomputer, formerly from China, only had 93 teraflops, less than half the level of Summit. It is 7 times faster than Titan, the world's most powerful supercomputer in the past. Both Summit and Titan are located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.

To make it easier to imagine, Summit can solve a complex problem in 1 hour compared to desktop computers that usually takes 30 years.

According to Engadget, the Summit includes 4,608-sized servers with two tennis courts, containing more than 9,000 22-core IBM Power9 processors, more than 27,000 NVIDIA Tesla V100 graphics cards. The cooling system consumes more than 15,000 liters of water per minute. Energy provides the Summit with enough activity for 8,100 houses.

Of course, America not only created the Summit to break the record of the strongest supercomputer that China is holding.It is designed for applications, machine learning (deep learning) and deep learning to study health, physics, climate models and many other areas.

Scientists have used the Summit to run the first "exascale" scientific operations, ie 1 billion billion calculations per second (equivalent to 1 exaop). The Summit can be implemented almost twice, it has run at 1.88 exaop to analyze millions of genomes, with the ability to increase to 3.3 exaop by using precise mixed operations.

Through Summit, the United States is aiming to build a full exascale computing ecosystem for research projects in 2021.

Projects include analysis (the explosion of stars that creates a bright object for a while) to find out how elements like gold move in the universe, or simulate new materials like super Superconductor, explore the relationship between factors leading to cancer such as genes, biomarkers and the environment by collecting huge health data. Summit's power can also be used to probe for signs of illness such as Alzheimer's, heart disease and addiction.

"Summit is allowing for completely new scientific research that cannot be done before , " said biologist Dan Jacobson.

Not only the US or China, European countries, Japan and some other countries are also building powerful supercomputers. In addition to health and environmental research, supercomputers are also used to design aircraft and develop nuclear weapons.
