After years of groping, Leo Skliros, a farmer in the Berry Springs region, south of Darwin, has succeeded with the mango-flavored, mango variety.

The mango has an elongated shape because one of the original mango varieties was created like Irwin - a mango with a long red fruit.

The other original mango variety belongs to Kensington Pride mango, which is favored by Australian mango cultivars because of its large fruit and strong flavor.

Mr. Skliros said it took him 3-4 years to develop this type of mango and it was difficult to predict the results of breeding in the early years. However, breeding is a necessary measure to effectively develop the farming industry.

He plans to name the new mango 'malibu' - a coconut flavored rum.

According to Mr. Skliros, it will take 2-3 years before he can launch the new malibu mango to market with commercial scale.
