Asphalt is a high viscosity, black liquid or semi-solid. The main component of asphalt is bitumen, the product from the refining process . But according to scientists, they can produce the same results using lignin, a substance found in all plants . Lignin has the function of binding components in trees and is considered as a product of the removal from the current paper production.

In the new study, experts say they have found a way to make lignin-bitumen compounds, which can reduce the bitumen and produce customized asphalt depending on the climate of the particular area . In warmer climates, it is possible to use hard and durable mixtures to ensure good weather even in hot weather. Whereas in cold climates, the compound is customized in a more flexible form.
"In the long term, we have to switch to using recyclable products, so using natural organic materials instead of crude oil will match the logic, " said Popsci on March 24. Said Slaghek, a specialist with TNO's nonprofit organization from the Netherlands.
Later this year, Slaghek and his co-workers will use a lignin mixture to cover a 100-meter-long bike path. Researchers in the province of Zeeland, the Netherlands, will apply the pavement or parking lot.
